A passion for photography
I became interested in photography almost 30 years ago when I chose to do a photo essay on the plants of Guam for a junior high science project.
I used my mother's 35 mm camera and took pictures of a dozen or so species of plant life on Guam.
As soon as the slides came back I was hooked.
In high school I returned to the states and took a photography class.
In those days I did all of my own darkroom work except for color printing.
I developed B&W and E-6 color slides in school darkrooms or at home.
I joined the yearbook staff and began taking a camera with me everywhere.
Two years later I wen to France on a high school trip and I bought my first serious camera -- a Pentax MX 35mm manual focues (everything was manual focus then) SLR.
By the time I was in college and on the newspaper staff, I had a medium format camera and a second MX in my camera bag.
In 1997 I switched to Nikon and bought a pair of Nikon N70's. This was my first foray into auto focus/exposure and zoom lenses.
I eventually supplemented the N70's with some simple point and shoot digital cameras (Kodak DC210, Canon A50, Canon S10).
Today I have gone completely digital and shoot a Nikon D100.
Today my job takes me all over the US and Canada.
I have started taking my camera with me in my travels.
When I am not working I get to take pictures in locations all over the country.
As my gallery shows I have been taking a lot of New York images recently.
On these pages you will find a gallery of my photos, information about the equipment I use, useful photo links as well as an essay on going digital and completely giving up film.
Of course I am not a professional photographer, I would classify myself as a committed hobbyist.
I am a computer consultant in my day job -- so occasionally I get very involved in the equipment.
I do have to remind myself once in a while that it is not about the camera -- it is about the images.
