Photography

I have been an amatuer photographer for almost 30 years. My current job takes me all over the country and I take my camera with me. Recently I bought a Nikon D100 digital SLR. As soon as it arrived, I sold all my film equipment on EBay.

For more info and a look at some of my work visit Dave's Photo Pages.

Table Tennis

I learned to play table tennis from my father. I never beat him in a match until he was almost 70 years old. Now my 19 year old beats me regularly and my 12 year old will be beating me soon.

We do not have a local club in our town but we play often and are beginning to travel to tournaments. I have won silver and bronze medals in the Iowa Games. This year none of us medalled but my 12 year old son won the 12 and under and 15 and under in the Quad City Open. He and I will play doubles at the Summer Iowa Games and my oldest will probably play with a Bosnian student he knows at college.

I play a prtty defensive game but my oldest is a smasher and my 12 year old son is a left-handed looper. We have just gotten a Newgy Table Tennis Robot we are hoping we can use it to help prepare for the summer Iowa Games.

Bicycling

I have been a serious bicyclist for almost 30 years. When I was in high school and college I did a few road races and criteriums. Over the years I have ridden several cross state rides (RAGBRAI) ranging from 400-500 miles in Iowa.

As a college freshman I had a great adventure -- I rode my bicycle from Lake Winnepesaukee, New Hampshire to Quebec City. I did this ride solo on an 80's vintage road racing bike carrying a tent and all my gear in panniers. This bike was an Austro-Daimler Vent Noir, a classic and one of the most beautiful production bikes ever made. The Vent-Noir had a flat black paint job with gold pinstriping and heart shaped cutouts on the lugs. Unusual for its day it had a black Shimano Dura-Ace Groupo sith Gold Fiamme Rims and sever other gold goodies. The chainrings were black Dura-Ace, driled out for weight (it was the eighties after all!)

In 1990 I built a mountain bike out of spare parts. Not too long after I bought a Schwinn Paramount PDG 70 and began mountain biking in earnest. Today i have a Specialized Stumpjumper FS, a Bridgestone RB-1 and a Burley Duet Tandem.

Of all my hobbies bicycling is the one to which I always return.

Flying

I have always wanted to fly. At this point I have just over 30 hours of flight training under my belt. I will probably tak a completion course in Arizona or Florida. These are special classes designed to complete flight training for people like me who have started and stopped taking lessons.

I have a diary of my flight training and other 'learn to fly' information on Dave's Flying Pages. on this site.

Tennis

I enjoy Tennis. Two of my sons and one of my daughters all play or palyed on their school teams. Jedidiah and Joshua both took lessons at Westfield Tennis club.

I especially enjoy playing doubles and now my children play at a high enough level that they are beating me. I hope my younger kids will also enjoy tennis.

Windsurfing

When I was working at Camp Lawrence (on an island on Lake Winnepesaukee, NH) I spent a lot of time around the water. It was there that I learned to sail and windsurf. When I came back from camp I joined the University sailing club and whenever the wind blew -- I would head out to the lake and get on a board.

Currently I have an old Mistral One Design but I would like to try some of the new wide board designs.

Barbershop

I have a very musical family. My oldest sone went to college on a piano performance scholarship and he sings with a couple of chorals. My daughter is in show choir and all my kids love to sing.

My brother in law has been singing barbershop music for several years and last year I took the plunge and joined the Harmony Hawks, my local chorus. My travel schedule makes it difficult to attend rehearsals and perform with the group. Even so I enjoy singing and really love the camaraderie of Barbershop.

On the road I sing with various choruses. I have had an opportunity to sing with three of the legendary Barbershop choruses, The Vocal Majority (Dallas), The Big Chicken Chorus (Marietta, Ga) and the Masters of Harmony (Los Angeles).

These were unbelievable experiences. Even though I am a barbershop novice I was able to pick up the music and step right up on the risers with these great choruses.

There is no friendlier group of men than barbershoppers. And there is no more fun group of barbershoppers than the Roswell Firehouse Harmony Brigade of Roswell, Georgia. At every meeting the chorus breaks up into impromptu quartets. Each week they take a video of the quartets and put them on the chorus web site. That evening I got to sing Bass in My Wild Irish Rose with three of the Roswell guys.

Skiing

Skiing seems like an odd hobby for someone like me from the flatlands. I first tried skiing in my high school P.E. class. I used to do a lot of cross country skiing but after a series of snowless winters I took up downhill skiing.

When I was in college I skiied with some guys who worked in a ski shop, they were great skiers and my skiing really began to improve. Now that my children are old enough to ski I am getting back into the sport.

Last year after years of skiing on long (200-208cm) straight-sided racing skiis, I finally upgraded to the new parabolic skiis. I bought a pair of Salomon X-Scream 9's. I could not believe how much of a difference these skiis made. Not only do I skii faster on these skiis but I feel like I am in more control. These skiis just go where you want them to -- no questions asked.

On my a trip to Copper I was skiing with my son Joshua and he wanted to ski the narrow bumpy trail under the lift. It was getting late and I didn't really want to push it so I suggested that we meet at a trail junction. Well he took off and after a while I reasoned that since I am a better skier, if Josh could ski the trail so could I. So I took off and before I knew it I had come up behind Josh. I was right behind him and as I passed him I patted him on the helment and took off. Dad may be old but he can still ski!

Juggling

I enjoy juggling, I can juggle three and four balls. For those of you who are jugglers, my signature move is the Boston Mess (a variant of Mill's Mess.)

At church recently I met a young man (13 years old) named Doug. When I first met him I even helped him learn a few moves. Two years later Doug juggles five with ease and he is working on doing seven. Among jugglers, five is what separates the men from the boys.

Clearly Doug is the man and I am the boy.
