Learning to Fly
I have always been fascinated by airplanes.
Starting as a child I used to read about them and watch them any time I had the chance.
I remember reading Jane's All the Worlds Aircraft as a second-grader.
While growing up my family moved to Guam for a time and I got to fly trans-Pacific on the old PanAm 747 clippers.
From the hil behind my grandfather's place we could look down at Naval Air Station Guam and watch the F4's and P3's go out on patrol.
In the mornings I could see flight after flight of B-52s from Anderson heading for SE Asia (I grew up during the Viet Nam war.)
I also saw the HU-16 Albatross flying boats flying SAR and MediVac missions to the outer islands.
As an adult I took a job working for Rockwell-Collins.
I worked in a group building avionics for business jets.
I was surrounded by pilots and aircraft enthusiats so I finally started taking lessons myself.
Unfortunately I have 36 hours of dual instruction and I do not have my pilot's license.
Like many others I reached a plateau in my lessons.
I still love to fly.
In fact in my day job I fly commercially about 100,000 miles per year.
Whenever I hear an airplane engine I look to the sky and my heart takes off once again.
I hope to complete my lessons some day.
This site is my contribution to the Internet aviation community.
If you read my flight diary you will see that I do not yet have my license.
My experience is quite typical.
I hope to take flying up again when I have more time.
